Shawson History
Shawson Gas was founded in 1939 by local physician, Dr. Shaw and Mr. Atchison. Hence the name Shawson. The founders saw a need for the installation of butane systems which had only recently become commercially available. The main uses of butane were supplemental heating and refrigeration in areas not served by natural (city) gas.

W. T. McRae went to work at Shawson Gas soon after it was founded. In 1945 W. T. McRae and his two sons, Ralph and Vernon bought Shawson Gas and continued to build the business in the post war years.  In the 1960’s butane was phased out in favor of the more efficient propane.

After the death of W. T. McRae  Shawson Gas was operated by Ralph and Vernon McRae until their retirement in 1989. Upon their retirement, Ralph McRae, Jr., the grandson of W. T. McRae and the son of Ralph McRae purchased Shawson Gas.

Ralph McRae, Jr. operated Shawson Gas from 1989 until it passed to the 4th generation in 2004.   At that time the company was purchased by David and Millie Ballagh. Millie is the daughter of Ralph McRae, Jr. and the great grand daughter of founder W. T. McRae.

Shawson Gas has had to adapt and change in many ways over the years to survive and remain viable in the 21st Century. The one thing that has not changed is the tradition of the commitment to “Quality Service” envisioned by W. T. McRae 65 years ago.
